Winter Skills Five Days

Our winter skills training covers the essential skills for winter mountain travel. Effective use of crampons and ice axe, understanding of snow and avalanche avoidance and winter navigation are essential skills for those looking to explore the mountains during winter. This course is carried out practically in the winter mountains with full days out in the mountains developing your winter mountaineering skills and summiting numerous Munros over five days. a

Prices & Dates

We deliver all winter guiding & instruction from November to the end of March.

  • £1500 for five days for 1 to 6 participants (PRIVATE)
  • Highland Guides Ratio 1 guide to 6 participants for all winter guiding & instruction. 
  • £500 per person for five days (OPEN)

Availible throughout the winter please just specify your dates on the booking form. 

Open course availible from Janaury to March every week monday to friday in the Cainrgorms National Park & Ben Nevis, Glencoe area. 

Course detail

Our comprehensive five day skills course for those looking to gain the skills for safe winter mountain travel. This course is carried practically out in the mountians. Skills covered while summiting various Scottish Munros: 

  • Movement with axe & crampons 
  • Self arrest 
  • Crampon technique on steep ground 
  • Avalanche awareness & avoidence 
  • Winter navigation 
  • Emergency procedures & shelters 
  • Equipment and clothing

We provide essential equipment in your cost

  • Ice axe 
  • Crampons
  • Helmet
  • Map & Compass
  • Ski Goggles 
  • Survival Bag

Winter clothing and mountain boots are not included, but winter boots can be easily hired in both Fort William and Aviemore from local sports shops. If needed, we can arrange to pick up the boots before the course starts. 

All mountain safety equipment, such as group shelters and first aid kits, will be supplied by the instructor including a Garmin in reach with all Highland Guides teams.
