Austrian Alpine Club

Highland Guides is the approved provider of Austrian Alpine Club UK’s courses in Scotland. Our proven track record has enabled us to provide technical training and experiences for one of the UK’s leading mountain sports clubs. The long-established Austrian Alpine club has a vast membership and offers numerous benefits with membership. 

Not to mention the reduced cost training on UK courses which we are proud to deliver. Our courses cover mountain training, rock climbing and summer scrambling. We deliver these in a wide range of areas in the Scottish Highlands utilising the best venues suited to the course. These are delivered by qualified and insured guides and instructors.

Skye Scrambles 

Our AACUK Skye scrambling and summer mountaineering course is designed to help develop the skills needed for roped scrambling and easier climbing. We deliver the course on the famous Skye Ridge on of the finest mountaineering and scrambling areas in the UK. During the course we focus on the following key areas. 

Key areas: Belaying, anchors, placing traditional protection, natural protection and a self-managed abseil. We also look at climbing technique, route choice and understanding scrambling grades.

We tend to use areas either on the Northern or Southern end of the Island.

Intro Rock Climbing 

Our AACUK introduction to rock climbing courses looks at beginner skills for those who are looking to get into traditional rock climbing in the UK. This course is delivered either in the Aviemore or Fort William areas giving access to a range of excellent single-pitch venues perfect for getting to grips with rock climbing. During the course, we focus on the following key areas. 

 

Key areas: Rock climbing technique, belaying both a seconding and leading climber, understanding traditional protection and its removal, anchors, self-managed abseil, climbing knots and understanding guidebooks and grades.

Winter Skills 

Bases from the Heart of Glencoe hostel we operate a series of winter skills & mountaineering courses. Our winter skills course is aimed at those who are looking to gain the skills to travel through the winter mountains with the use of ice axe and crampons. This also cover the other essential skills for independent and safe winter mountain travel. 

Key Areas: 

How to move on snow, including kicking steps

Use of ice axe for walking, cutting steps and self arrest

Use of crampons in ascent and for descent

Avalanche awareness

Safe route choice

Navigation and route planning

Equipment and clothing

Winter Mountaineering 

Bases from the Heart of Glencoe hostel we operate a series of winter skills & mountaineering courses.

Our mountaineering course looks to 

Learn and develop the technical skills for movement on steep ground and

ridges. This is ideal for those who have experience with winter walking and are looking to develop the skills to tackle more technical winter mountain ground.

How to make and use snow anchors, including buried axe and snow bollards

How to use rock anchors

Rope work and belaying

Abseiling using snow anchors
