Nevis Skills & Summit

Our popular Nevis skills course aims to combine an ascent of the UK’s highest mountain Ben Nevis along with the essential skills needed for safe winter mountain travel. Ice axe and crampon technique, avalanche avoidance and awareness along with navigation are all covered. Based in Fort William we have a comprehensive skills training day and then put it into practice with an ascent of Ben Nevis. Both days are full winter mountain days in the mountains.

Prices & Dates

We deliver all winter guiding & instruction from November to the end of March.

  • £280 per day for 1 participant (PRIVATE)
  • £300 per day for 2  participants (PRIVATE)
  • £350 per day for 3 to 6 participants (PRIVATE)
  • £200 for the two days (OPEN)
  • Highland Guides Ratio 1 guide to 6 participants for all winter guiding & instruction. 

Availible throughout the winter please just specify your dates on the booking form. 

Course detail

Our popular skills & summit course combines both the essential skills for winter mountin travel along with summiting the UK's highest mountian Ben Nevis. Skills covered include.

  • Travel with ice axe and crampons
  • Self arrest 
  • Crampon technique 
  • Winter navigation 
  • Avalanche Awareness & avoidence 

Day one is a skills based day often using Aonach Mor or a nearby summit developing those skills. Day 2 our ascent of Ben Nevis. These are full mountian days with all skills being covered while out in the mountians. 

Whats included in the cost?

We provide essential equipment in your cost

  • Ice axe 
  • Crampons
  • Helmet
  • Map & Compass
  • Ski Goggles 
  • Survival Bag

Winter clothing and mountain boots are not included, but winter boots can be easily hired in both Fort William and Aviemore from local sports shops. If needed, we can arrange to pick up the boots before the course starts. 

All mountain safety equipment, such as group shelters and first aid kits, will be supplied by the instructor including a Garmin in reach with all Highland Guides teams.
